Outlet Half Switched

Read the legal disclaimer page - click the legal link in the menu at bottom of page

For those that live where the new 2011 NEC code is in effect, please read
'2011 NEC New Rule 'Switch Connections'
If this applies to you, the switch wiring options that is in compliance with this new rule will be indicated bellow as '2011 NEC compliant'

Now this new rule applies to switches that control lighting loads and in this section you are switching on and off power to part of an outlet, however the most common use of a half switched outlet is to control a pole or table lamp than is plugged into the switched portion of the outlet therefore this rule may still apply (if you do not fall under an exception to the rule) if you live in an area where the 2011 NEC is in effect.

These are outlets that are found in some homes that has half of the duplex outlet switched and the other half with always on power. Some newer homes have rooms that have no ceiling light but a switch able outlet where you can have a pole lamp for instance that can be controlled by a wall switch.
